Character Education

Social Work News:

There has been several fun and interesting programs for elementary students during the months of December and January.  Students enjoyed having Angela Harris, Recycling Coordinator, and Department of Public Health, visit our school during December.  She conducted classes for grades kindergarten through 5 emphasizing the importance of recycling and identifying the various products that are currently eligible for re-use.  The students then had the opportunity to participate in a hands-on activity – recycling Christmas cards for nursing home residents.  High School Student Council members helped throughout the day in the class, utilizing their leadership skills and gaining information for their own recycling program.  Everyone had a great time and gained valuable “green” information.

The fourth and fifth grades will benefit from the Snow Flurry program. The Prevention Group presents the program from Sacred Heart Griffin.  It is an interactive program designed to teach students about positive choices.  Students sing, perform skits and participate in small group discussions revolving around making positive decisions and resisting peer pressure.  It is a morning filled with fun and educational activities.

In addition, our Social Worker and Guidance Counselor have been working through out the year on a Student Assistance Program.  Students who are having academic difficulties in the Middle School have been identified at progress report and report card periods.  Several students have begun working with individual High School Mentors.  Other students have begun working during activity period with Ms. Gooder’s homeroom students to provide organization and academic assistance.  The hope is that this extra assistance will help identified Middle School students achieve continued academic success.

Character Lies Within

Character is defined as the combined moral or ethical structure of an individual. The character education program at Tri-City Elementary is designed to enhance positive character traits instilled in students by their families and the community. Specific character traits emphasized include, but are not limited to, respect, responsibility, integrity, empathy, and cooperation. Interactive classes are offered throughout the year for grades PreK through 5 to provide the opportunity to discuss and learn about the importance of these positive traits. In addition to offered classes, community speakers are utilized to enhance the program. These speakers are provided at no cost to the district and included such topics as hand washing, nutrition, exercise, and positive choices.
